Steered Straight Assembly

Grangeville Middle School and Clearwater Valley Middle School gathered at GHS to hear from a nationally-respected presenter on the topic of substance abuse.  Our GEMS  students were respectful and attentive to the main message that trusted adults (like parents and school staff members) should be a go-to resource when kids need support (whether they are trying to overcome an addiction or navigate peer pressure surrounding behaviors that lead to addiction). The presenter took on the myth that vaping is a "safer" vice than cigarettes and showed students that vaping is only aimed at addicting a new generation to nicotine with no interest in protecting them from the vape device's delivery system that exposes vape users to worse carcinogens than cigarettes.  He also explained that tobacco companies (vape suppliers) are now using stronger and more addictive synthetic nicotine.   After the presentation, many students chose to commit to avoiding underage alcohol and nicotine use and a few turned in their vape devices to the presenter.
